Les Saintes Go Marching In!

March 16, 2011

                                 Gustavia St Barts France

We awoke this morning to the sound of rain. We have no shore excursion planned on Iles Des Saintes, the port on the small island of Terre-De-Haut, which in turn is part of the group of islands known as Guadeloupe.  We will wait a while to see if the rain lets up.  If not, we’ll don raingear and tender over to the island.  The island boasts one of the finest bays in the world, but it is too shallow and small for the Prinsendam to anchor.

The population of the island is mainly Caucasian, mostly sailors and fisher-folk who are descended from Breton corsairs (pirates)…we will be on guard!  We’ve also been forewarned to watch out for goats that have overrun the island. No doubt their abundance explains the most popular island dish of Cabri (wild goat).  Think we will pass!

The rain cleared and we rode the tender in.  The village was filled with tiny brightly-painted houses.  We checked out the local landmark, a doctor’s home which is in the form of a ship’s bow.

Feeling the need to volunteer we checked out the local library.  It was all “French” to us.

The island is only 3 miles long and 2 miles wide but it provided us with so many photo ops. (99 to be exact, but don’t worry, we aren’t posting all of them.  We spent a very relaxed morning strolling around this very appealing French Caribbean island.

Back on board and enjoying a lazy afternoon.
