A Long Day

Friday, March 11, 2001
We woke up this morning to the devastating news of the earthquake in Japan and the report of a tsunami warning for Maui.  We boarded our flight to Ft. Lauderdale with much trepidation but are happy to report that we have heard from many friends on Maui and there was no damage.  It sure brought back memories of our tsunami experience last February while on Maui.  The flights, including the security procedures were uneventful.  We’re checked into the Westin here in Ft. Lauderdale and are enjoying a lovely spacious room.  That will change tomorrow but we aren’t complaining.
We start our adventure with great enthusiasm and are looking forward to all the new experiences.  We’re not sure what will happen with the ports in Egypt, but we know the ship will do whatever is in the best interest of us all.  We are just keeping our fingers crossed that we will be able to do the tours in Israel.  The cruise line has canceled several ports on other cruises due to unstable local conditions in the area and has replaced them with alternate ports.
Barney and I feel especially blessed as we set off on this cruise as we received a special blessing from Fr. Damien Cook, the priest that you have all heard us talk about.  We were talking to Father after Mass last Saturday evening and he offered to give us a blessing.  We both had tears in our eyes and chicken skin…Thank you, Father…
…and good night.
